The course is designed to be accessible to a broad audience of practitioners across all sectors of the public health and related workforce including public health nurses, health educators, and others.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Recognize current genetics advances and technologies
Relate how current genetics advances and technologies will influence public health practice
Recognize how the interactions between genes and environment impact both disease development and disease prevention
Contribute to discussions on the planning, development, and implementation of genomics policy
Identify ethical, legal, and social issues arising from genetic information, advances, and testing
Contribute to the evaluation of current and future genomics programs
Recognize the relevance of genomics to public health

Continuing education credit and completion certificates are available to those who successfully complete the course. The course was originally developed in 2004. While much of the foundational information remains relevant, there have been advances in the field since that time. For that reason, Weeks 3 and 6 are not offered for continuing education credit, but participants are encouraged to view the material in the video and especially in the 2015 Updates Companion Guide.

The 2015 Updates Companion Guide was developed by Angela Trepanier, MS, CGC. Ms. Trepanier is the Director of the Genetic Counseling Graduate Program and Assistant Professor (Clinical) at the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, Wayne State University School of Medicine.

This self-paced course builds a foundation for understanding genomic advances and identifying the relevance of genomics to public health. This course is presented online and structured in six (6) units. The course units focus on:

Introduction to Genomics
Genes in Populations
Genetic Testing
Gene-Environment Interactions
Ethical, Legal and Social Issues
An Overview of State and National Resources

The course provides video presentations and accompanying instructor slides for each topic. Each unit is matched with a short quiz and additional resources to provide more information on the topic. Transcripts of the lectures, including PowerPoint slides, are also available to registered users.
